Family Week at Daycare... I Have TWO Mommies - oh boy!

So, Lorea takes Akins to school this morning and one of the teachers comes to her and says "can I talk to you for a minute". Lorea is like "sure". She proceeds to nervously tell Lorea that this is family week at the Day Care and so it is the week in which all the kids talk/tell about their families and the Day Care helps them understand their family dynamics and the differences in others. SOOOOO..... she said "well Akins told us yesterday he has two Mommies"! She said they proceeded to ask him what his Mommies names were and he said Lorea and then she said what do other people call your other Mommy and then finally said Valerie and he said "yeah". We haven't spent much time on my given name it is just Mommy to him. She said that basically they had already been wondering - CLUE # 1 Lorea usually drops him off, and I usually pick him up as now that we are settled in this has been working well with our schedules. CLUE # 2 no matter which of us is there he calls us Mommy. Then she proceeded to ask what we prefer to be called and explained that they wanted to be sure that they did not confuse him as they were helping him understand his family and how it is differnt then others. Some familes have Mommy and Daddy, some just have one etc. I was not sure where this was going as Lorea was recounting the story. BIG SIGH....

Val and Lorea,

As much as I'd like to think that this country is getting more accepting, this is a perfect example of where there is LOTS of room for improvement. As an adoptee myself, I always loved the days that we talked about our nationality and family structure! I hope the daycare learns to handle this better with parents.
